Now that all the big name games are out the UK sales chart is beginning
to enter a new phase, dominated not by new releases but by the buying
habits of Christmas gift hunters. Many of the most mass market games saw
sales increases this week, with Modern Warfare 3 staying at number one
in both charts thanks to a 2 per cent boost.
Buy Just Dance 3
Just Dance 3 though spiked by 54 per cent this week, rising as high as
number two in the individual format charts - suggesting that it could
well end up as the Christmas number one. Especially as this week's
PlayStation 3 version is the only release left this year.
FIFA 12 sales jumped by 30 per cent, while Super Mario 3D Land was up by
20 per cent, and Battlefield 3 by 16 per cent. As predicted Zumba
Fitness 2 sales have also started warming up, with a 97 per cent
increase at number 23 in the individual formats chart. Abba: You Can
Dance though beat them all with sales increasing by 252 per cent to get
it to number 32.
Going in the other direction were the sales of more core-orientated
games, with Assassin's Creed: Revelations down 2 per cent, Skyrim down 7
per cent, and Saints Row: The Third down 24 per cent.
The only new entry in the chart was Mario Kart 7, which came in at
number eight in the multiformat chart and number five in the individual
formats. As you can see it's one of two 3DS games in the top 10, and one
of three Mario games if you count Mario & Sonic At The London 2012
Olympic Games on the Wii.
Together with Professor Layton And The Spectre's Call the game's success
also gives Nintendo three titles in the top 10, the most of any
publisher this week. Fortunes change quickly in the games industry and
the question of who will win the Christmas sales battle is harder to
call than ever…
